How to Find the Mental Strength to Push Through the Pain and Start Again

At What Waist we aren’t just about helping you to reach your fitness goals, we’re trying to improve all areas of your mind, body and soul. After all, inner strength and outer strength are undeniably linked. If you’re struggling with how to heal from trauma, we’ve compiled a list of the top mental health tips to offer our warriors some support.

Say Goodbye to Self-blame

Don’t judge yourself for what has happened to you. Small reminder: It was never your fault. Feelings of anger, guilt, and shame are completely normal after a traumatic event, but it’s important to try and be forgiving of yourself. Don’t fixate on your flaws or faults. Instead, honor the idea that everyone experiences pain and it’s nothing to feel bad about.

Practice Self-love

Show yourself the same compassion and understanding you would a friend who was going through your situation. Be kind to yourself and listen to what your body needs. If you need to sleep, sleep. If you feel like a warm bath would help, try that. Allow yourself to heal by caring for that voice inside of you.

Express Your Feelings

There’s no shame in needing to tell someone else your thoughts and feelings. In fact, this can often be very healing. Reach out to a family member or friend you can really trust to listen in a non-judgemental way. If you don’t have anyone you feel comfortable talking to, write your feelings down in a diary. Getting emotions and ideas out of your brain and onto paper can be a really cathartic exercise, and can have a positive impact on dealing with trauma.

Take Up a New Hobby

Following a trauma, it’s very common for people to want to hide away from the world and reject social occasions and events. You might feel like you are protecting yourself by withdrawing from others. But isolation can make things worse. Connecting with others can help you heal (even if you aren’t talking about your trauma), so make an effort to avoid spending too much time alone. Picking up a new hobby can be a great way to ease yourself into being social again — without the heavy conversations with friends. Joining a book club or gym can be a great way to be around others and also can help you get out of your head.

Try and Focus on the Present Moment

Flashbacks are a side effect of a traumatic event, and it can feel awful reliving distressing moments over and over again. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simple workout routines are all good ways to focus your mind on what’s going on in the present moment.

We hope you’ve found these tips helpful, and we want to let you know that you are not alone, warrior. There is a whole community of us on Instagram and we are here to support you. If you are struggling badly with mental health, however, please do seek professional health. Practice self-love and take care of yourself always.
