How a Positive Attitude Can Improve Your Health

A Subtle Shift in Perspective Might Be the Key to Your Fitness Goals

In
this new year, many of us have fitness goals at the top of our minds. And that's no surprise. Achieving and maintaining good health tends to be our biggest, yet most difficult New Year's resolutions to stick to.

In fact, one study by Strava — a social network for athletes — predicts that most people will quit on their New Year's goals by January 19th.

Why?

Because when it comes to our health, many of us don't know how to set healthy, realistic goals. Sadly, the media has miseducated us about what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle.

This is why we caution people not to expect quick results. There’s more to it than just buying a product or trying a workout program.

We put enormous amounts of pressure on ourselves to change overnight. We get discouraged, we quit, and we start to falsely believe achieving a healthy lifestyle is not for us.

But what if we’re focusing on the wrong thing?

What if, instead of the results, we focused on the process?

The First Step to Improving Your Health

When we want to change our health, many of us focus on our actions, the outcome, and our physical appearance. And while this isn't completely wrong, we miss a key ingredient to our success — our mindset, our attitude, and how we want to feel.

Surprisingly, just thinking positively has shown to have tremendous benefits on your health overall. Studies have shown that having a positive attitude can help relieve stress, boost your immune system, and also increase your resiliency.

As you see, having a positive mindset and attitude are critical to changing your health. Because it “sets the mood” for how you will frame your results during the process.

So, now that you know why a positive attitude is important, how can you keep it throughout the process?

How to Maintain a Positive Attitude About Your Health Goals

When we’re first starting our health journey, it can be tempting to feed into negative self-talk. Especially if it’s a habit we’ve formed over time.

Telling yourself you can’t do something that you actually want to do is a recipe for disaster.

But if we know that maintaining a positive attitude is important to achieving our goals, we must be proactive about creating an environment that encourages it.

And how do we do that?

Well, here are three ways we can make it easier on ourselves to maintain a positive attitude:

  1. Adopt a growth mindset about your health (and life): What is a growth mindset? According to Dr. Carol S. Dweck, author of Mindset, a growth mindset allows you to see challenges as an opportunity for growth, rather than failure. It provides room for improvement, mistakes, and grace. Not perfection. This mindset will help you see healthy living as a process and not a destination.

  2. Speak and listen to positivity: Get in the habit of speaking more positively about yourself. Write affirmations. Create a playlist of positive music and inspiring videos. Continually surround yourself with these influences daily.

  3. Find a positive accountability partner: Having an accountability partner is a great way to enforce positive change and results in your health. It’s key to find someone who’s goals align with yours, who sees your potential, and can positively encourage you.

Adopting and maintaining a positive attitude about your health can be challenging. But with the right mindset, media, and environment - positive transformation is a lot easier.
